Common Florida Weeds
Having a healthy and beautiful lawn requires a certain amount of maintenance. It’s important to make sure that your lawn is cut to the appropriate height for the season. Also, be sure to water it properly. At Challenger Irrigation, we can help you care for your lawn by installing an irrigation system. We can set up your system to ensure that your lawn is being watered properly. As much as you try to create a lawn that is beautiful, it is not uncommon for pesky weeds to get in the way. One of the easiest ways to help prevent weeds from overpowering your lawn is to apply a fertilizer that kills weeds. Before you invest in fertilizer, it is important to know what type of weeds are in your lawn.
Common Florida Weeds
Chamberbitter – This is also known as gripe weed and grows in the early summer. It grows upright and has a well-developed pattern.
Crabgrass – This weed grows rapidly in the sun and not only spreads quickly, but leaves its seeds all over, which will continue growing.
Dollarweed – This is also known as pennywort and has leaves shaped like a silver dollar. The leaves look extremely similar to a lillypad.
Kyllinga- This weed grows year round and thrives in lawns that are cut to 1 inch or less. It invades areas that remain extremely wet.
Doveweed – This weed looks extremely similar to grass and begins to grow in the late spring and will continue through the summer. This weed thrives in extremely wet grass, so it is important not to overwater your lawn.
Spurge – Be careful with this weed, as the leaves release a sap that can cause severe irritation to eyes and skin upon contact. This weed grows low to the ground and grows quickly.
