The Florida sun and heat can be brutal to your landscape. A good irrigation system is essential for our climate. When you choose your system, consider the vegetation, soil structure, existing landscape, and other factors. Careful planning of your irrigation system saves time, effort, and money. A properly calibrated system gives your landscape the right amount of water for growth. Choose the right irrigation system to suit your needs. Common systems are sprinkler systems, drip irrigation systems, soaker hoses, and riser pipes.
Sprinkler Systems. These systems spray water in the air to imitate the effect of rain. When the water comes down, it soaks into the grass slowly. Sprinkler systems are better suited for large areas of grass. Use pop-up sprinkler heads on your lawn. Space them the correct distance apart to avoid over-watering. Use sprinklers early in the morning to limit evaporation.
Drip Irrigation Systems. This system delivers a steady and slow stream of water to plant roots. It’s a great choice for flower beds, vegetable gardens, and shrubs. This method reduces water runoff and evaporation. Drip systems have thin, perforated pipes installed below the surface of the soil. The blocking mechanisms cover the holes to control the water it dispenses.
Soaker Hoses. They operate like drip irrigations systems, but the system is manual. This is commonly used for shrubs and flower beds. You move the hoses wherever they’re needed. Soaker hoses connect to garden hoses, and the water comes out of the holes in the pipe system.
Riser Pipes. They function like sprinkler systems. They’re installed in flower beds to water delicate plants. Riser pipes use nozzle heads for control of the angle, volume, and direction of the water flow. You adjust it to the needs of the specific plant. The water comes out at a lower pressure than sprinkler systems. Use early in the mornings so the water absorbs into the flowerbed.
