Every year on April 22nd we celebrate a special holiday to honor the Earth. Originated in 1970, Earth Day is an annual event celebrated by the world to show our appreciation for the environment. It is a special time that we are able to recognize how fragile our planet is, educate the population on ways to care for the planet, and share the importance of using items to support sustainability. Earth Day is the world’s largest environmental movement, with the end goal being for each person to treat everyday like Earth Day.
This year, we wanted to share some ways that you can celebrate Earth Day with your family as a special way to recognize how you can work together to be more environmentally friendly. One component that can be added to the day is creating a challenge that all family members will be electronics free for the day. Many people don’t realize the effect that endless electronics usage has on our natural resources.
Family-Friendly Activities
There are many ways to spend time as a family while being more environmentally friendly:
Plant a Family Garden
Many times, you hear about the suggestion to plant a tree for Earth Day, and while that is a popular activity, we wanted to give the suggestion to plant a garden. If your choice is a vegetable garden, it is something that your family can enjoy and reep the benefits of your hard work.
Clean Up the Neighborhood
Take a family walk in your neighborhood or local park and pick up any litter or trash that has been left behind. Make sure each family member has a garbage bag and pair of gloves. Make it a fun competition to see who can pick up the most trash and recyclables.
Other fun suggestions:
- Plant a tree
- Go on a nature walk
- Build a birdhouse
- Take a bike ride
- Make a fun craft out of recycled materials
