We know that we are still in the middle of winter, but we feel that it is never too soon to start planning out what ideas you have for your lawn in the warmer months. Before we know it, the weather will change and it will be the perfect time to plant grass seed. Due to the heat we experience, we need to be mindful and choose a grass that is drought resistant, while at the same time being mindful of hurricane season and the torrential rains that can flood the grass.
We have compiled a list we feel gives some good choices of grass that thrive in our area. While no grass is perfect, you can look at your lifestyle and choose the best fit for your family.
St. Augustine
This is the most popular choice in our area due to its tolerance to high heat. It is also flood resistant and able to withstand and thrive in sandy soil. There are different types of St. Augustine grasses that are resistant to insects, such as chinch bugs, that damage lawns. The one drawback is that it is considered high maintenance due to the fact that it must be mowed weekly during the height of the season, going dormant in the winter.
Zoysia
This turf-like grass is perfect for a family that sees a lot of outdoor traffic: kids playing, practicing your golf swing, kicking a soccer ball. It is a low maintenance grass that is drought resistant and very dense, eliminating the possibility of issues with weeds.
Bermuda Grass
This grass does very well with drought, high traffic, and does not have many weeds. The one downside is that it is very hearty and needs some maintenance to make sure it doesn’t take over your driveway and sidewalk.
Buffalo Grass
This grass does not require direct sunlight to grow. Similar to the St. Augustine, this option has a long dormancy period and can appear brown. It will quickly come back to green and thriving with the arrival of the warmer weather.
