Why Use Mulch In Your Landscaping
If you are looking to redo your landscaping this year before the heat of summer arrives, there is one thing you cannot do without — mulch. Mulch is any type of material that is laid out as a covering over soil. It is not only used to protect the soil, but it protects the foliage nearby. For home landscaping, most homeowners prefer to use wood mulch. A layer of mulch provides many benefits and can be used around shrubs, bushes, and trees. It can also be used as a soft surface for a playground.
Mulch Tips
Here are some helpful tips to ensure your mulch application is successful:
Place Mulch in Spring
- The best time to place mulch in your yard is during the spring season. Unfortunately, it is too hot during the summer months, and the sun may have already dried out the soil. We also recommend placing it when the ground is dry. If you place mulch after a heavy rain, the moisture will be trapped in the soil and will lead to a problem with mold.
Prepare Your Materials
- If you are planning to place mulch in your yard, you will need a wheelbarrow, a mulch barrier, and a shovel or rake. A wheelbarrow will be helpful in moving the mulch from place to place in your yard. A mulch barrier needs to be placed between the soil and the mulch to help prevent weeds from growing and protect the soil as well. A shovel and a rake will be helpful in spreading the mulch around your yard.
Use Gardening Gloves or a Shovel
- We would not recommend moving the mulch with your bare hands. Since it is usually a form of wood, it can be damaging to your hands and nails. The surface of the mulch chips is often jagged and can leave splinters and rough surfaces on your hands.
After you plant your landscaping and place the mulch, be sure that your irrigation system meets what needs to be watered. If it does not, we can always come and move your sprinkler heads.
