Hurricane Landscaping
We are officially in hurricane season. While we typically don’t see storms this early, it is always wise to prepare yourself and your property. Taking certain precautions can help you avoid costly damage and the need for repairs to your outdoor property and your home. Here are some helpful tips:
Choose Hurricane-Resistant Trees
There is a wide variety of trees that can withstand strong winds. These trees grow deeper roots and have larger trunks, making it more difficult for hurricane-force winds to damage them.
Plant Trees in Groups
In addition to planting certain types of trees, it is also wise to plant trees in groups. When trees are planted together instead of being planted sporadically throughout a properly, it is more difficult for them to become damaged during storms.
Maintain Trees
Be sure to periodically inspect trees for branches that should be trimmed or removed. Larger trees should be further away from large structures such as your home, a shed, or a screened-in patio, while smaller trees should be closer.
Choose a Sturdy Fence
Invest in a fence that can withstand strong winds and rain. Contrary to what you may think, a solid structure is not ideal. You want to look for an option that allows the wind to move through easily.
Invest in Soft Mulch
If you are looking for something to surround the base of your landscaping or playground area, we recommend choosing a soft mulch, such as rubber or wood, over stones, rocks, or gravel. It is easy for these items to become airborne during strong winds, causing severe damage to your home, car, and property.
Inspect Your Irrigation System
Be sure to monitor your irrigation system and ensure that all sprinkler heads and the main system are secured in place.
If you have any issues with your irrigation system during this hurricane season, we would be happy to help. At Challenger Irrigation, we are happy to serve Hernando, Pasco, Pinellas, and Citrus counties. We look forward to hearing from you soon!
