Don’t Bug Out! Some Insects Are Beneficial To Your Property
Insects and bugs usually bring a strong reaction out of people. Either you love them, tolerate them, or hate them. Many people’s first instinct is to kill any bug they see; however, people shouldn’t be so quick to splat or squash every insect they encounter. There are a number of insects that are helpful to our gardens, lawns, and landscaping.
Bugs and Insects Can be Our Friend
While many think of bugs and insects as a nuisance, they can be extremely beneficial to our property. In fact, more insects are helpful than harmful. Some helpful insects eat harmful insects, allowing our plants and flowers to grow and thrive, while others help to create rich, lush soil that is perfect for gardening. Helpful insects can include ladybugs, bees, butterflies, dragonflies, lacewings and earwigs.
Plants to Attract Beneficial Insects
Bug haters might find it hard to believe, but there are beautiful plants and flowers that can be used to attract beneficial bugs to your property. Some of these plants include sunflowers, lemon balm or daisies. If insects make you squeamish, be sure to plant these flowers out of sight.
Be Mindful of Fertilizers
It is important to be mindful of the fertilizer you are using on your property. While it can be great for ridding your lawn of weeds and other harmful insects and critters, it can quickly kill everything in its path, including the helpful bugs. This can disrupt the ecosystem, as many other animals need these bugs for survival. Be mindful of the type of fertilizer you use and be sure to only use it when necessary.
