How To Repair Your Lawn After Flooding
Now that May has arrived, we are quickly approaching the months when heavy rain and storms can happen at any time. Since our area is prone to heavy rain in a short amount of time, one problem that can occur unexpectedly is flooding. We want to share some helpful tips on how to repair your lawn if you experience flooding.
Clean Debris
After any heavy rainfall or flooding, it is important to check your property for signs of damage and remove any debris that may have fallen or made its way into your yard. This includes leaves, branches, twigs, and trash. Leaving these materials in your yard can not only lead to damage to your lawn but also cause severe damage to your lawn mower.
Aerate Your Lawn
One problem you may notice with your lawn after flooding is that the grass appears flat or compacted. It is best to stay off of your lawn for a while to let it dry properly without the wear and tear of being walked on. It is also helpful to aerate your lawn. This is the process of using a series of small spikes that are quickly placed and removed from the lawn. This process makes small holes throughout your lawn so air and sunlight can reach the roots of the grass and properly dry it. After aerating your lawn, you can also apply grass seed to help restore any damaged areas.
Check Sprinkler Heads and Irrigation System
It is important to check your entire irrigation system, including the sprinkler heads, to be sure they have not been damaged. You should also be careful not to overwater your lawn after severe rain or flooding. Watering your lawn improperly can cause major damage over time.
