How To Protect Your Irrigation System From Power Surges
We don’t know about you, but we are excited about the arrival of spring in a few short weeks. With more consistent warmer weather right around the corner, we know everyone is going to be getting their irrigation system out of winter mode and start using it more frequently. One aspect of the warmer weather that we know nobody is looking forward to is the summer storms and hurricanes. Although these storms usually move through quickly, sometimes they cause damage. You may be surprised to learn that a power surge can do more than harm your appliances. It can also cause significant damage to your irrigation system.
What Damage Does a Power Surge Cause?
When there is a loss of power, the flow of water through the irrigation system is disrupted. When the power turns back on, the immediate surge will cause more pressure on your system than usual. The excess pressure can cause the pipes to crack, cause valve damage, and lead to a leak. In many cases, the damage is not immediately noticeable but will become evident days, if not weeks, later.
To help prevent damage from a power surge, invest in an outdoor surge protector. You may already have indoor surge protectors in your home for your electronics. You can also have the power lines grounded, so if there is a problem, the power will be directed into the ground.
